Chick-Fil-As host huge crowds

Yesterday, August 1, 2012, a new world record was set.  At the London Olympics? Well, maybe so, but that’s not what I am referring to. Yesterday was the largest single record day of sales for one of this country’s most popular fast-food chains.  And, in case you have been in a coma for the past week, I am talking about Atlanta-based Chick-Fil-A.   So what prompted this sudden surge in doing what “the cows” request? It all resulted from an interview by Chick-Fil-A CEO Dan Cathy in Baptist Press about marriage.

Now I am not telling you anything you haven’t heard about, but it does illustrate how worldview issues are manifest in the real world.  The controversy actually involves two related issues, one regarding moral values and the other regarding one’s Constitutional rights.  In his comments Dan Cathy was expressing his moral beliefs based on his biblical and Christian worldview.  He was speaking for himself what one would expect from a committed evangelical believer. He simply stated that humans are arrogant if they think they can override God’s definition of marriage as given by Him in Genesis (2:24) and reiterated by Jesus Himself (Matt. 19: 5-6; Mark 10:8). If non-Christians (or even some Christians) disagree with that perspective it is their right to do so. It is even their right to boycott Chick-Fil-A.

However, and this is where the Constitutional aspects come into play, it is never the matter of government to restrict or interfere with any legally functioning private business.  Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino have no right telling Chick-Fil-A or any other legal company that they cannot open in their cities simply because they disagree with the moral values of its owner!

Dan Cathy’s statement echoed the values and worldview of millions of Bible believing people in this country. Yesterday, they, and many other freedom loving Americans, expressed their appreciation for his bold call for righteousness and loudly rebuffed those who would stand in the way of his freedom to do so!  That’s a world record truly worthy of a gold medal
