Recently I came across an article that caught my attention. Since the title was a question, and one that I felt was worth grappling with, I have used it a the title of this blog, as well: Was Our Universe Created in a Laboratory?
The original article was written by Abraham “Avi” Loeb. He is an Israeli-American theoretical physicist who works in the field of astrophysics and cosmology. And Loeb is no lightweight. He is the Frank B. Baird Jr. Professor of Science at Harvard University, and is the former chair of that department.
Over the years, various cosmologists have wrestled with questions about the origin of the universe. Most of these folks are, or have been, committed Naturalists. Naturalism is the belief that the natural universe, operating by natural laws, is all that exists. It is a religious belief (based on faith), not a scientific one.
