Is it normal to give sexually explicit health advice to children about how to use sex toys, how to get tests for HIV, or how to hook up with same sex partners – all the while hiding it from their parents? Well, it depends on the values people hold. Those whose values are informed by naturalistic worldview assumptions are likely to say, “Yes, it’s normal.” People whose values are informed by biblical worldview values, on the other hand, are likely to think of it as abnormal.
Secular Normal
Well how about if it is the government that is giving the advice. What values should the government express?
In truth, that is not a very good question. The reason is that governments don’t have values. The government is an institution, and is inanimate. The government doesn’t consciously do anything. What makes the determination are the people who lead and work in the institution. It is people who have values, not institutions. Values are definitely expressed through societal institutions, but it is not the values of the institution that are in play, but those of the people who control the institution.
During the Joe Biden administration, the ones who controlled the institution of the federal government were primarily people who held a naturalistic worldview. Naturalistic values are not derived from any objective source because that worldview system doesn’t acknowledge the existence of an objective moral authority source. Naturalism is the belief that the natural universe, operating by natural laws, is all that exists. It is atheistic. Thus, Naturalists must make up their own moral beliefs based on their personal preferences. So, when they were in control, they developed a system that allowed them to give sexually explicit health advice to children behind the backs of their parents through the government agencies they controlled. Here is what actually happened.
The federal government paid a nonprofit organization more than $27 million to send sexually explicit health advice to children via text message. The Health and Human Services Department (HHS) for ten years contracted the Center for Innovative Public Health Research to develop a program called Girls2Girls in order to provide this service. To accomplish their goal, the center secretly enrolled children to participate in the program, ostensibly to study teenage sexual behavior. Since they felt that telling parents about it would skew the research, HHS provided the center “waivers of parental permission” to conduct their “research.”
The texting program involved sending teenaged girls ages 14 to 16 up to ten texts per day about such topics as how to prevent pregnancy, how to obtain birth control, the use of “lube,” the use of sex toys, different types of sex and ways to increase pleasure, and how to mitigate the risk of STDs or pregnancy. They also pressured the girls to obtain condoms and taught them how to access emergency contraception (the morning after pill).
According to the center’s researchers, “there was no need to consult with parents about enrolling their children. … We have worked closely with our ethical review board to make sure that we have designed a program that best protects the safety of the teens in our program. This includes allowing them to make their own decision about whether to take part in the research and not tell her parents if she does not want to.” And to incentivize participation, participants were offered gift cards worth up to $270.00 – all courtesy of Uncle Sam. It should be noted that there was a program designed for boys, as well. Christian Normal
Christian beliefs actually do have an objective set of moral beliefs that they put forth. Those beliefs have been revealed by God and are found in the Bible.
When it comes to sexual morality, Christians would never develop a program to send sexually explicit health advice to children via text message, and would never suggest keeping important information about children from their parents.
It should be noted, that when it comes to sexuality, the Bible is not prudish. Sex is understood as a normal part of human life and that God created it as something good. That said, it does reveal that God reserved sex for the marriage of one man and one woman for life. God did make sex to be pleasurable, but that pleasure is not simply for the purpose of human pleasure. It is a means for a husband and wife to spiritually bond in a way that continually deepens their relationship. In biblical terminology based on Genesis 2:24, “… two shall become one flesh.” It is not just a union of two bodies, but the spiritual union of two souls. When it becomes nothing more than a physical act of pleasure, the very purpose of sex is cheapened, and the deepening of relationship it was meant to create is thwarted.
Naturalistic belief does not acknowledge the existence of a spiritual realm. All it recognizes is physical reality. With that, there can be no deeper meaning for sexual intimacy than physical pleasure.
But Naturalists completely miss a critical component of reality. There is a spiritual existence. It originated in God, and He made us in a way that allows us to participate in it. We participate in it as we engage a personal relationship with Him, but also as we live our earthly life based on the way He has revealed reality to exist. When it comes to sexuality, there is a component that goes beyond the physical, but we could never know it if our understanding of reality excludes a recognition of spiritual reality as revealed by God. Christian normal gets it.
Is What We See in Modern Society Normal?
Learning that the government is using tax payer money for immoral purposes that destroy the lives of young people is quite disturbing. However, it is nothing more than a reflection of what is going on in society in general. The government wouldn’t be developing immoral programs and promoting immoral policies if it were not already so accepted in society. This kind of immorality is so common in virtually every part of society that it is considered quite normal to a very large segment of the population. It has been normalized on TV, in movies, and even in much of the news media.
So specifically, what non-biblical practices have been so normalized?
- Fornication – Sexual relations between people who are not married.
- Adultery – Sexual relations by a married person with someone not their spouse.
- Homosexuality – Sexual relations between two people of the same sex.
- Transgenderism – Living life as a person whose gender is different from their biological sex.
- Polyamory – Engaging in romantic liaisons with multiple partners with the consent of all involved.
- Polygamy – Having more than one wife or husband at the same time.
- Polygyny – A form of polygamy in which a husband has more than one wife.
- Polyandry – A form of polygamy in which a woman has more than one husband.
- Open relationships – A marriage or relationship in which both partners agree that each may have sexual relations with others outside of their own relationship.
- Orgy – A wild party characterized by excessive drinking and indiscriminate sexual activity.
If God does not exist, then there is no such thing as objective morality and people get to make up their own moral beliefs. In that case, no kind of sexual activity can be considered objectively immoral. In order for there to be something that can objectively be called moral or immoral, there must be an authority source that transcends the material world, and that can decree something to be either moral or immoral.
Naturalism does not acknowledge the existence of a transcendent authority source. In fact, it doesn’t acknowledge the existence of anything outside of the natural universe at all. If that belief is true, then there is no other possibility but for human beings to make up their own morality based on their personal preferences. And that is exactly what we have when people accept the various sexual activities listed above.
The question is, “Is that true?” Is there actually no such thing as transcendent reality? And if there is not, how do people who believe it know their belief is true?
Look at these facts. People who believe that the natural universe, operating by natural laws, is all that exists must also believe certain other things.
1. The material that makes up the natural universe is either eternal or it naturally came into existence spontaneously out of nothing. Neither of those things can be demonstrated by science, so those who believe it must do so by faith.
2. Life had to have emerged out of non-life. That also cannot be demonstrated by science, so those who believe it must believe by faith.
3. All life forms that exist had to have come into existence by naturalistic evolution. It is certainly true that many people who call themselves scientists not only believe it, but even affirm that science has proven it. That, however, is actually not true. The scientists who believe that affirm it because they believe there is no other possibility, since they don’t believe in God. However, no known biological process has ever has ever been found to show it is even possible for a living organism to evolve from a less to a more complex form. Those who believe it is possible must believe it by faith.
4. Consciousness had to have somehow emerged from non-consciousness. Once again, those who study this have no idea how it could even be possible. They believe it by faith because they simply don’t acknowledge the possibility that a creator God exists.
Naturalism is not a scientific belief system, it is a faith system just as surely as any other religious belief – in spite of the fact that Naturalists generally believe that their beliefs are based on science. Thus, the moral beliefs that emerge out of it are also based on faith. Thus, when those in government who hold this belief system develop programs and promote policies that push their morality on the public, they are actually promoting their religious beliefs and pushing it out on others.
Naturalists consider their moral beliefs and practices to be normal. They have no reason to think otherwise. But pushing their sexual immorality on all of society is not normal. Biblical morality is what actually corresponds to reality. It is the Christian normal that is the true normal.
