There are an increasing number of states that are legalizing abortion right up to the moment of delivery. As of this writing, the states that allow for this include Alaska, Colorado, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, and Vermont, along with Washington, D.C. – and as of this writing, Virginia is working to join the club. This kind of legislation has been considered in other states, as well, so this list will probably grow. Beyond that, one of the two major political parties, the Democrat Party, has made it a part of its platform to support abortion through all nine months of pregnancy – for virtually any reason. That party also supports taxpayer funding to do it. Just to be clear, to “abort” a baby at that late stage requires that a doctor first kill the baby in order to deliver it dead.
But the problem does not just relate to late term abortions. Any abortion is the killing of an innocent human being – which is the very definition of murder.
Those who support abortion try to frame the argument in terms of “a woman’s right to choose.” What they mean by this is that the woman who is carrying the child in her body should have the final say as to whether or not the child is allowed to grow to term. No outside person should have the right to tell her what she must do with her body.
The problem with that argument, however, is that it is not only the woman’s body that is in play in this circumstance. There is another body there, as well – the baby. And just because the baby is not yet developed enough to live outside the womb, does not mean it is not a human being. It is a human being, not some other kind of creature. Additionally, it is its own person (has its own DNA that is different from both the mother and the father), and it is living.
Without trying to moralize on this topic beyond what has already been said, once a child has been conceived, the parents have a sacred responsibility to protect and care for it. If they are responsible enough to create a new life, they should also be responsible enough to protect it.
Which brings us to the real reason this is an issue. With naturalistic philosophy having become so dominant in modern society with its relativistic morality, people who believe in abortion simply don’t see the immorality either in sex outside of marriage or in the killing of unborn babies. However, both of those things are immoral. God actually does exist and he has revealed to us his truth about both sexuality and about the value of life.
Not every Christian is going to be on the front lines politically to advocate for biblical morality in this arena. However, every Christian should be active in holding their government representatives accountable. Abortion really is murder, and standing up for life is a God given stewardship responsibility for every believer.
