Darrien and Ryan met on a dating app and decided to meet in person. According to their own testimony, they fell in love right away. Darrien originally downloaded the app in order to hook up with other girls, but for some reason changed her preferences, and Ryan’s face popped up.
On their first date, Darrien made sure to let Ryan know of her sexual preferences so there would not be any misunderstandings. She considers herself “sexually fluid,” meaning she wants to be able to have completely unrestricted sexual relations with anyone she wants. In fact, it seems that she had just gotten out of a relationship with a couple before she met Ryan. Apparently Ryan feels the same way. In fact, he hopes that at some point he can find another man to hook up with, as well.
But Darrien and Ryan loved each other enough that they decided to get married – well, sort of. Rather than a legal marriage, they decided on a “spiritual marriage” that they held in the Sequoia National Forest in California. They did the ceremony on a blanket covered in pinecones and crystals. In fact, they even took on the last name Seqqoya in honor of the place where they got married.
Not too long after that, Darrien met Beth on a dating app and the two of them started dating. She then introduced Beth to Ryan, so the three of them hooked up. But they really couldn’t consider themselves quite a “throuple” (a three person relationship), because Beth was, herself, in an ongoing relationship with another man.
All of them together are passionate about being able to express their love in the way they believe fits them best. In fact, Ryan and Darrien want to help you get the special kind of love they have, as well, so they are documenting their relationship on YouTube. There they explain the finer points of their lifestyle, their “spiritual marriage,” and their sexual fluidity. Ryan explains, “It’s finally time to just be who we are, to accept the gift that God has given us, which is the ability to love infinitely in all directions.”
I’m not making this story up. It all came from an actual news article on a well known and highly regarded news site. And sadly, this kind of mindset is actually not that uncommon in certain circles.
And if, indeed, human beings are nothing more than one species of natural animal, what could possibly be wrong with it? Based on their thinking, there is no such thing as sexual immorality. In spite of the fact Ryan claimed that the love he and Darrien (and the others) share with one another is a gift from God, you have to understand that he is not talking about the God of the Bible.
It is actually hard to know exactly what their true religious beliefs are without more information. The sentiment expressed in the article certainly has all of the hallmarks of some expression of a naturalistic worldview. But at the same time, they did have their “wedding” out in nature over crystals. Seems like they are into some kind of hybrid religion – perhaps with a New Age twist. But whatever it is, it doesn’t reflect reality.
Human beings were not made for hedonism. That kind of selfish mentality does not provide the sort of satisfaction that fulfills the longings of the human soul. Human beings were not made for multiple partners. Polygamy, polyandry, and all the other “pollys” do not provide the kind of deep spiritual connection that God made man to enjoy. Human beings were not made for homosexual relationships. That kind of relationship defies the very nature of the existence of human beings as male and female.
Of course, free sex, sexual fluidity, and the ability to “love infinitely in any direction” are nothing new. These kinds of sexual expressions have been around for nearly the entirety of human existence. There is really nothing new at all about sexual immorality, and, in the end, there is also no ultimate satisfaction in it.
God created human beings in a particular way, and he created them to relate to him and to other people in particular ways. Attempting to achieve satisfaction in relationships that extend outside of the way God created them to exist invites emptiness and futility. Sexual immorality, in any form, is outside of the way God created reality to exist. It ultimately creates separation rather than unity – separation from other people, and separation from God.
