In 1789 George Washington wrote regarding religious freedom, “If I could have entertained the slightest apprehension that the Constitution framed in the Convention, where I had the honor to preside, might possibly endanger the religious rights of any ecclesiastical society, certainly I should never have placed my signature to it..” The First Amendment guarantees freedoms concerning religion, expression, assembly, and the right to petition. It forbids Congress from both promoting one religion over others and also restricting an individual’s religious practices. It says in part that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”. What it does not say is that there is freedom from religion, which is something groups like the Freedom From Religion Foundation have no concept of. They claim that we can be good without God,whom they don’t believe in but greatly offends them. But isn’t it true that we have murderers, rapists, thieves, liars, adulterers, etc. Also our words and thoughts,if we were honest, have not always been good ones. How do atheists account for the fact that every man knows in his heart it is wrong to murder, it is wrong to steal, and it is wrong to lie?
