Recently a video produced by BuzzFeed about Christianity has been making the rounds. This one is called, “I’m Christian, But I’m Not.” (You can view it at: https://youtu.be/5bWHSpmXEJs.)
In the video, a number of young people identify themselves as Christians, then turn right around and share their beliefs, attitudes and actions which are contrary to what the Bible teaches. Essentially, all of them have their own personal definition of Christianity. Different ones self-identify as gay, feminist, liberal, open minded and so on. They go on to say that it pains them that the culture identifies Christians in a bad way. Then they blame the people who believe what the Bible teaches for that bad reputation.
These folks have a strong desire to be identified with Christianity – just not biblical Christianity. They want to be sexually active, philosophically naturalistic, and participate fully in the sinful parts of pop culture, without having to face any consequences for their sin. People can do that without self-identifying as Christian. So why do these kids want to be called Christians?
It’s actually not that complicated. What they are really after is a free ticket to heaven. They want to be accepted by God while, at the same time, be the master of their own lives. Sorry folks, it just doesn’t work that way. A person who is a true Christian has, literally, been changed by God. And a person who has been changed by God simply doesn’t want to do what these young people are advocating. We don’t have to be their judge to inspect their fruit – and their fruit is not Christian fruit. These kids can call themselves anything they want, but it doesn’t change the reality. They are simply not Christians.
